“Language is the foundation of civilization. It is a glue that holds people together, and it is the first weapon drawn in a conflict.”

I had to think of arrival when I talked about languages a divided between cultures, arrival is a really good movie about language and communication and the understanding of languages.
From the ted talk.: how languages shape the way we think
Language transports thoughts from brain to brain. Your thoughts are translated into soundwaves and are brought to the person that's listing to you. The sound waves will be captured by that person using his eardrums and will then be translated to thoughts again. We are able as humans to transmit ideas and concepts through space and time.

Therefor language can shape different ideas, and she gives some examples of that. like a tribe that lives in Australia that doesn't greet each other like we do with satin hey or hi. No they say where there going in saying directions like I`m going southwest, or " I`m going east north. But also when they talk about things in places. Like I have a fly on me southeast feet. And therefore they are way better in directions than normal people are. And when you ask them to put photo`s on a timeline. We as western people put them from left to right from young to older. Where these tribes would change the timeline every time they change the directions of where the direction of where they are looking at. therefor they change their perception of time towards what they see in front of them, thoughts the things that they are surrounded with

In german you connect gender to objects like the moon or the sun. Where germans say the sun is male. and the moon is female. Therefor if you ask a German to describe a sun, they might say its man or feminine.

but also the understanding and talking about colors can be different per Language. In Russian you won't say light or dark blue, you would define the kind of blue. Therefor people that speak Russian can defriend colors way fast than normal people.

So i was thinking to use scrabble as game of inspiration and change that to a game of inercation of getting too know some one via a new languages.
What is the rupture?
Language is the main thing I and my girlfriend and her family divide ( besides some traditions of not wearing any shoes in your house or any other household or watching tv). We communicated via English mostly, and I sometimes dutch. but it is one of the barriers of our true selves.
we for sure noticed this at the beginning of our relationship, where I self had problems expressing myself in English, you cant put emotion in a language you don't know if its a joke or something personal you want to tell the other. After a while when I gained some more experience in understanding and talking English I could express myself better thoughts to my girlfriend. But we still have some problems with our vocabulary or expression that I better in our native languages. And I see these kinds of problems in other relationships with people that have a boyfriend or girlfriend from the other country. So I would like to solve this rupture it brings to not, only my relationship but also of others.
ii) Metaphorical mending. This refers to repairing more abstract things through a symbolic action, for instance re-lationships to other people, family, friends, colleagues, educational institutions, en-vironment, etc. Think about what kind of relationship and history you had with the person/organization/social structure/envi-ronment. How and why did it rupture? What kind of rupture took place? And what kind of new reconnection do you wish to nurture? This action can be also be combined with literal mending, where the literal mend is used to reinforce the symbolic mend.
I think the metaphorical mending fits with my rupture the best but can get also closer by fiscal mending while doing something that is from the same cultural background. It could also be just taking about a objects name in you foreign language and thinking about what it means to you, or what you think about.

I`m also thinking too cook together some traditional meals and blend them together while speaking in our own language.

hands mending lascaux
scrolling through youtube i saw this video. It was about how humans tried to remember themselves and the thing they lived with, by painting these things on the wall. One of these things they painted where hands. And what the most interesting thing was that back then every culture every human did these things all the same. Even tho there was no communication back then. Still, people painted there hands the same way as I Europe or in South America. I thought its beautiful that even tho your same where else on the planted and you never met each other you still make the same things. It says that all humans are the same.

I perhaps it could be fun to do the same thing here as well.
hands mending lascaux
I feel more connected and intrigued by the method of hands mending Lascaux. Because of the same cultural meaning, it has for any human thousands of years ago. I found this the best way to visually communicate with people that even tho don't speak the same languages you still get what it means.
